Artists on both sides of the Atlantic, including The Incredible String Band, Vashti Bunyan, Pearls Before Swine and Comus, combined sweet melancholy and modal melody with shape-shifting experimentation to create sounds of unsettling oddness that sometimes go under the name acid or psych folk. A few of these artists--notably the String Band, who actually made it to Woodstock--achieved mainstream success, while others remained resolutely entrenched underground. But by the mid-70s even the bigger artists found sales dwindling, and this peculiar hybrid musical genre fell profoundly out of favour. For 30 years it languished in obscurity, apparently beyond the reaches of cultural reassessment, until, in the mid-2000s a new generation of artists collectively tagged 'New Weird America' and spearheaded by Devendra Banhart, Espers and Joanna Newsom rediscovered acid and psych folk, revered it and from it, created something new. In researching England's Dreaming, Savage conducted hundreds of hours of interviews of which only a fraction made it into the finished book. Now, in The England's Dreaming Tapes, Savage makes available for the first time the full, uncut, sensational story behind the cultural moment that was punk.Here is the story of a generation that changed the world in just a few months in 1976, as told by the scene's major figures: all four original Sex Pistols as well as Joe Strummer, Chrissie Hynde, Jordan, Siouxsie Sioux, Viv Albertine, Adam Ant, Lee Black Childers, Howard Devoto, Pete Shelley, Syl Sylvain, Debbie Wilson, Tony Wilson, Jah Wobble, and many others. Together, they offer a sweeping history of the late 1960s and the 1970s-not just the era's music, but also its radical politics, social issues, fashion, and culture.An invaluable source of information about a movement that has become obscured by myth, these vivid, unvarnished interviews were conducted when punk was only a decade old. In many cases, this was the first time that the subjects had talked about the period. The interviews describe the founding of the Sex Pistols; 430 King's Road, site of the legendary boutique Sex, which helped establish the punk aesthetic; punk rock New York; the cultural landscapes of London and its suburbs; the writers who covered punk; and the Manchester music scene centered around Factory Records.With The England's Dreaming Tapes, Savage gives us the first and final word on the music, fashion, and attitude that defined this influential and incendiary era.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0275/8921/4278/products/TheEngland_sDreamingTapes_TheEssentialGuidetoEngland_sDreaming_TheSeminalHistoryofPunk_JonSavage.jpg?v=1591108230
u2-no-line-on-the-horizon-all-songs-from-the-album-arranged-for-guitar-tablature-complete-with-lyrics
U2 - No Line On The Horizon, All Songs From The Album Arranged for Guitar Tablature, Complete With Lyrics

Paperback

Condition: New

No Line On The Horizon is U2 's 12th studio album, and has been widely recieved as being comparable to their best work. Before graduating in Fine Art in Context, and embarking on his present artistic quests, Drake was the official photographer with "WOMAD". The portraits are mixed, some posed, some taken in performance, and others questioning the parameters of 'Portraiture'. Although Drake recognises the status of the famous artists he refuses to grant them extra importance, so we see iconic musicians on equal ground with little or hardly known artists/musicians. This is not solely a collection of photographic portraits. On the facing page of each portrait there is a quintessential quote from each artist. These are surprisingly articulate and intimate. In addition to this there is a poignancy to this volume, in that at least half a dozen of the artists have passed away, Joe Strummer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Ali Farka Toure to name but a few, and apart from their recorded music these portraits and quotes are all that remain. From a technical perspective the portraits are wide and varied. For example the portrait of Najma Akhtar used on the cover of the CD 'Atish' was taken taken in St James' Park at sunrise using three flash heads (one buried in the pond!) being fired simultaneously. The images are a celebration and pay homage to the role of the musician within our society and as Peter Gabriel has stated in his forward, that music is indeed one of the most potent forms of expression against the constant battle with racism. Some/Many of the images have been used on CD covers and other publicity. The strength and integrity of the book comes from the diversity, not only from the subjects/artists themselves, but also from the diversity and magnificence of the images.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0275/8921/4278/products/SoundsofMusic_PhotographsByFrankDrake_ForewordbyPeterGabriel.jpg?v=1591176647
the-word-on-the-street-paul-muldoon
The Word on the Street; Paul Muldoon

Condition: New

In his new book of rock lyrics, Paul Muldoon goes back to the essential meaning of the term "lyric" - a short poem sung to the accompaniment of a musical instrument. Cunningham

Paperback

Condition: New

The Cantigas de Santa Maria, a collection of over 400 songs praising the Virgin Mary and narrating her miracles, constitutes one of the most important collections of vernacular songs ('vernacular' in this case being Galician) to survive with their music from before 1300. The collection was assembled at the direction of Alfonso X 'The Learned', king (1252-84) of Castile and Leon, who may also have composed some of the texts and even melodies. The musical notation in the three surviving musically-notated manuscripts conveys the melodies without diffuculty to a modern reader. However, some aspects of rhythmic inter-pretation (i.e. the relative duration of the notational symbols, of which there are over 150) are still a matter for debate. A further important aspect is that the earliest form in which the corpus was put together-known as the 'Toledo codex', which contains about a third of the eventual repertoire-is encoded in a different (arguably earlier) form of musical notation. Almost all the pieces included for study in this volume survive in two different notational systems, to the advantage of the process of decipherment. This investigation takes as its corpus the first layer of notated cantigas, essentially those that survive in 'Toledo notation, ' although the notation of all sources is considered. This allows the differing notational codes to be compared, and valuable information to be extracted. What emerges from detailed analysis is a group of sixteen pieces, all making use of the same specific notational procedure for notating dotted rhythms in the absence of a half-beat symbol. Of the sixteen cantigas, eleven occur in the first 100 pieces, thus nearly quadrupling any previous estimate of the presence of pieces with dotted rhythm. In the analysis accompanying each piece, particular emphasis is laid on the correspondence of musical and textual stress, as well as on features such as regularity of musical phrase-lengths. The edited cantigas are embedded in the discussion and analysis, but are laid out as self-standing performing editions of the pieces concerned. An Appendix provides full editions of the original Galician texts-a feature not generally encountered in musical editions of the Cantigas-and full English translations. There are brief notes on syllable-division and word-stress for the help of performers. This book traces the history of the private-eye movie, from its emergence in a handful of influential film noirs in the 1940s, through its slow and brilliant decline in 1970s 'neo-noir' cinema, to the passing of its central figure into present-day movie mythology. The private eye is usually seen as a romantic hero, a 'lone wolf' who confronts and makes sense of a violent and chaotic modern world on behalf of the viewer. In his discussion of classic films such as The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, and Out of the Past, acclaimed 1970s movies like Chinatown, The Long Goodbye and Klute, and many lesser-known examples, Bran Nicol challenges these stereotypes, arguing that the job of the private eye is not about solving crimes so much as uncovering private worlds, and private lives. Although ostensibly thrillers, such films are actually preoccupied by 'domestic' issues such as work, home, and love. The private eye is revealed as a figure that investigates the concealments of others, at the expense of his own private life.
The Private Eye combines a lucid introduction to an under-explored tradition in movie history with a new approach to the detective in fiction and film. This deceptively simple statement belies the complex definition and meaning of stardom and more specifically of rock icons. Shumway looks at the careers and cultural legacies of seven rock stars in the context of popular music and culture - Elvis Presley, James Brown, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, and Bruce Springsteen. Granted, there are many more names that fall into the rock icon category and that might rightfully appear on this list. Partly, that is the point: "rock star" is a familiar and desired category but also a contested one. Shumway investigates the rock star as a particular kind of cultural construction, different from mere celebrity. After the golden age of moviemaking, media exposure allowed rock stars more political sway than Hollywood's studio stars, and rock stars gradually replaced movie stars as key cultural heroes.
Because of changes in American society and the media industries, rock stars have become much more explicitly political figures than were the stars of Hollywood's studio era. Rock stars, moreover, are icons of change, though not always progressive, whose public personas read like texts produced collaboratively by the performers themselves, their managers, and record companies. These stars thrive in a variety of media, including recorded music, concert performance, dress, staging, cover art, films, television, video, print, and others. Through Dylan's eyes and open mind, we see Greenwich Village, circa 1961, when he first arrives in Manhattan. Dylan's New York is a magical city of possibilities -- smoky, nightlong parties; literary awakenings; transient loves and unbreakable friendships. Elegiac observations are punctuated by jabs of memories, penetrating and tough. With the book's side trips to New Orleans, Woodstock, Minnesota and points west, Chronicles: Volume One is an intimate and intensely personal recollection of extraordinary times.

By turns revealing, poetical, passionate and witty, Chronicles: Volume One is a mesmerizing window on Bob Dylan's thoughts and influences.
